What is Polished Concrete?
Concrete Polishing Questions
You have questions about concrete polishing…we have the answers. If you don’t find your questions here, give Great American Flooring in Wichita, Kansas a call.
What is polished concrete?
Polished concrete is a process, using diamond abrasives, along with hardener/densifiers, that turns a dull concrete slab into a shiny, durable, easy to maintain, finished flooring option.
What is the difference between polished concrete and acid stained concrete?
Acid stained concrete requires a topical sealer that will eventually wear or flake off. Polished concrete obtains a decorative look by adding integral color to the concrete as it is poured (for new concrete) or by using a penetrating dye on an existing concrete slab. This penetrating, breathable stain protection will not peel or flake off.
What kind of maintenance does polished concrete require?
While some claim that polished concrete is a “no-maintenance” floor, the reality is that every floor requires maintenance. Polished concrete is one of the lowest maintenance flooring options available today. Sweeping, damp mopping, auto-scrubbing (in commercial applications) and occasionally burnishing will keep your polished concrete floor looking its best.
How long do I have to stay off the floor?
A polished concrete floor is ready for use immediately after polishing is completed. If a sealer is used, it will be ready for use after 24 hours.
Is polished concrete slippery?
A lot of people have the impression that polished concrete is slippery. In reality, polished concrete is safer than untreated concrete. Polished concrete surfaces meet or exceed OSHA, ADA and NFSI (National Floor Safety Institute) standards.
Can outdoor concrete such as driveways and patios be polished?
It is not recommended to polish concrete that is exposed to the elements such as rain, snow and ice. For recommendations of decorative applications on exterior concrete give us a call at 316-264-3660 to schedule a free consultation.
Can polished concrete floors have different colors or designs?
Yes! Colors can be added either during the pouring of the concrete for new slabs or with a penetrating, breathable dye on existing slabs. Designs are limited only by your imagination. Take a look at our photo gallery to see just a few ideas.
